A rare plant in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), found only in a few states in northern and central Mexico. The word "chilcuague" has its origins in Nahuatl, because this plant was recognized as chilcoat—"chil" for spicy, and "coatl" for the shape of its snake-like root. Traditionally also used as a spice in food or alcoholic beverages, the roots are often used as a substitute for hot pepper in Mexican cuisine.
